The 34th Meeting of the International Resource Panel (IRP) was held virtually from 3 to 7 November 2025. Scientists, government officials, and strategic partners from around the world gathered to discuss resource-related challenges and advanced the IRP’s 2026–2029 Work Programme.
This year’s meeting is critical for setting the IRP’s future direction. It reviewed ongoing work, approved the Terms of Reference for the Global Resources Outlook 2028 and Scenario Modelling, and discussed & approved the 2026–2029 Work Programme. Other strategic and operational topics were also discussed.
Recent findings underscore the urgency of transitioning to sustainable resource systems. In 2024, CO₂ levels rose by 3.5 ppm—the highest annual increase on record. Scientists warn that the carbon budget for 1.5°C could be depleted within 2–3 years. Meanwhile, 8.1 million hectares of forest were lost last year, weakening natural carbon sinks. These trends call for immediate, coordinated global action.
As part of the global science-policy network, the IRP plays a vital role in addressing these challenges. The 34th meeting provided strategic guidance to strengthen that role.
