The 30th Meeting of the International Resource Panel (IRP) took place in Bangkok, Thailand, from 12 to 16 June 2023. Participants from all over the world, including scientists, government representatives, and strategic partners, came together to discuss resource-related topics and advance the IRP’s 2022-2025 programme of work. The meeting was co-hosted by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.
We are grateful to our co-host, UNESCAP, for helping us make this event possible. Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana (UNESCAP Executive Secretary), Ms. Marlene Nilsson (Deputy Regional Director, ROAP) and IRP Steering Committee member Japan, Mr. Atoshi Yoshida (Ministry of the Environment of Japan), honoured us by opening our Joint Meeting.
The UNEP-IRP’s most recent report, Human Migration and Natural Resources was presented. This work was led by Saleem Ali, Dominic Kniveton and Riyanti Djalante.
Really exciting and insightful discussions between the scientific experts, government representatives and strategic partners! Members charted an impact pathway to UNEA-6, and approved two studies for external peer review: one was the forthcoming Global Resources Outlook 2024, the other a study on ‘Financing the Extractive Industry to Achieve the #SDGs”.
We also had the opportunity to strengthen ties with regional stakeholders!
At the sides of 30IRP, a 2-day regional workshop on ‘Strengthening evidence-based SCP policies as a vehicle for economic and social transformation’ was organized by the One Planet Network and GO4SDGs, with support from PAGE and IRP.
We presented the Global Material Flows Database and conducted a training on the very useful SCP Hotspot Analysis Tool together with the Life Cycle Initiative and TERI.
We also participated in a great EU-ASEAN event on circular economy transitions in ASEAN, organized by the ASEAN Center for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue (ACSDSD), the hosting institution of the ASEAN Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform (ACESP).
And last but not least, we held a side event on ‘Towards Responsible and Sustainable Mining’, together with the Intergovernmental Consultation on UNEA Resolution 5.12.
